U.S. House
Wyoming has a single U.S. House seat to represent the entire state. House members serve two-year terms. Republican U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin announced early she would not seek an eighth term. Wilson Democrat Gary Trauner announced in October he would try for the second consecutive election to win the seat. Former state treasurer Cynthia Lummis, of Cheyenne, emerged from a crowded Republican field in August to earn her party's nomination.
Senate
Because of the death of U.S. Sen. Craig Thomas in June 2007, both of Wyoming's U.S. Senate seats are up for election this year. Senators serve six-year terms.
Republican U.S. Sen. John Barrasso, of Casper, who was appointed to the Senate after Thomas' death, has filed to run for re-election. Democrat Nick Carter, of Gillette, beat former state legislator Keith Goodenough, of Casper, for the party's nomination. Though senators serve six-year terms, whoever wins the general election will serve for only two more years, the remainder of Thomas' official term, before standing for re-election. The short term will stagger the terms of the state's two senators, so that in the future Wyoming will not elect its entire federal delegation in the same election.
Republican U.S. Sen Mike Enzi, of Gillette, is seeking re-election to a third term. He is challenged by Democrat Chris Rothfuss, of Laramie, who teaches chemical engineering at the University of Wyoming.
